A secondary battery is provided to ensure excellent safety upon overcharge by consuming an overcharged current through electrochemical reactions, particularly in a high-output high-capacity battery. A secondary battery having an electrode assembly capable of repeating charge/discharge cycles comprises a separate electrode (safety electrode) formed of a material(overcharge-reactive material(344)) causing an electrochemical reaction upon overcharge in the electrode assembly. The safety electrode(340) forms the whole or a part of a single wound layer jelly roll-like electrode assembly, or forms one or two electrode layers in a stacked electrode assembly(300).
