DETECTING METHOD OF FOG IN IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS AND IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect the presence or absence of fog with ease without wastefully consuming a recording medium such as paper.

SOLUTION: While fog toner images are absent on an intermediate transfer belt 18, the density of the surface of the belt 18 is detected by a density sensor 20. Fog toner images are formed on a photoreceptor 11 and the transfer of these images to the intermediate transfer belt 18 is carried out over more than one time, thereby superimposing the fog toner images onto the intermediate transfer belt 18. The density of the fog toner images formed by the superimposition is detected by the density sensor 20. The density of the detected fog toner images and the density of the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 18 when fog toner images are absent are compared with each other. If a difference between them is equal to a specified value or greater, the fog is determined to be present.
