PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal spray method and a thermal spray masking device, capable of sufficiently thermally spraying particles on the side surface of a cylinder bore in the vicinity of the end surface thereof without being influenced by the position accuracy of a masking part in a thermal spray using the masking part.SOLUTION: A thermal spray method comprises: the masking step of arranging a thermal spray masking device 10 for protecting the end surface of a cylinder bore from a thermal spray when thermally spraying the side surface thereof and including a masking part 11 having an opening 14 having an inner diameter larger than that of the cylinder bore, on an end surface having the opening of a cylinder block; the thermal spray step of thermally spraying particles in a direction approximately vertical to the axis line of the cylinder bore toward the side surface of the cylinder bore; the detachment step of detaching the masking device from the cylinder block; and the removal step of removing the thermally sprayed particles from the end surface of the cylinder block.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
