The effluent from steam cracking of a hydrocarbon (e.g. ethane, naphtha, gas oil or a cut ranging from 180-410‹ C. as in Example 1) is subjected to the following separation and purification sequence: (a) fractionation to separate a normally gaseous fraction and a normally. liquid fraction (comprising, for example, petrol and gas oil/fuel oil components as in Example 1); (b) contacting said normally gaseous fraction at 16-80‹ C. with a hydrocarbon solvents boiling at at least 120‹ C. so as to absorb C 4 components while leaving a gaseous fraction of C 1-3 components; (c) separating the C 4 components from the solvent; e.g. by heating, pressure expansion or gas stripping (d) treating the C 4 fraction with a mineral base solutions e.g. a solution of a hydroxide-of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal; and (e) treating with C 1-3 fraction with an organic base solution, e.g. a solution of an amine or an alkanolamine. The hydrocarbon solvent in step (b) may be octane, decane, hexadecane decalin, cyclododecane, or a kerosene, gas oil, lube oil or fuel oil. It is stated that ethylene and butadiene. may be recovered from the C 1-3 and C 4 fractions respectively. |
