PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve spalling resistance and manifest excellent durability comparable to that of refractory brick by mixing an alumina aggregate with graphite and a magnesia having a specific particle diameter in a specific proportion. SOLUTION: This monolithic refractory is obtained by mixing 3-20 wt.% of graphite with 1-10 wt.% of a magnesia having 100-3,000 μm average particle diameter. Artificial graphite having 100-1,000 μm particle diameter is most preferred as the graphite. An electrofused magnesia is most preferred as the magnesia. Alumina having 0.1 μm to 10 mm particle size is usually used; however, up to about 50 wt.% of the alumina may be replaced with a magnesia- alumina-spinel having 0.1 μm to 10 mm particle size. A pitch powder in an amount of 0.5-6 wt.% is preferably further added or 4-20 wt.% of an SiC powder having <=100 μm particle diameter is preferably mixed. |
