1302780 Making electrical connections; crimping; angular bending; shearing THOMAS & BETTS CORP 21 Oct 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 50013/70 Headings B3A, B3E B3Q and B3W Apparatus for preforming a wire grip on a terminal 12 and for crimping the wire grip about a wire 64, the terminal being supplied from a continuous strip thereof, comprises upper and lower die sets for engaging the forward-most and next succeeding terminals on the strip. In operation, the forwardmost terminal is positioned with its grip tongues 16, (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), under a bending die 36. The upper die set is lowered thereby bending the tongues upwardly as a pad 54 pivots downwardly against a spring 58. On raising the die set, the strip is advanced so that the bent tongues locate in a cavity in an anvil 46. The upper die set is again lowered and a blade 32 cuts out a neck (14) joining adjacent terminals, Fig. 1, before the die 34 crimps the tongues 16, (18). The tongue (18) is crimped about the wire 64 and the tongue 16, which is the longer of the two, is crimped about the wire insulation 66. A spring-loaded pad 38 holds the terminal during crimping and shearing. |
