PURPOSE:To economically obtain the titled compound useful as a production raw material for herbicide, at a low cost, by reacting 2-[4-(cyclopenten-2-yl) phenoxy]alkanoic acid ester with hydrogen peroxide solution in the presence of a mineral acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II can be produced by reacting the compound of formula I (R<1> is H or methyl; R<2> is 1-5C alkyl) with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide in an alcohol solvent in the presence of a mineral acid catalyst at 20-70 deg.C. The amount of the hydrogen peroxide solution is 1.0-2.5mol per 1mol of the compound of formula I and the concentration of the solution is preferably 30-60wt%. The amount of the acid catalyst is 0.1-2.0mol. The starting compound of formula I is produced by reacting 4-(cyclopenten-2-yl)phenol with an alpha-halogenoalkanoic acid ester.
