PURPOSE:To industrially obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for high polymer materials, medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., at a low cost, by reacting an aminoalcohol and/or hydrochloride thereof with phosgene in the presence of water and a dehydrochlorinating agent while preferably keeping the pH of a reaction system within a given range. CONSTITUTION:An aminoalcohol expressed by formula I (R is H, methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl; R1 and R2 are H, methyl or ethyl), e.g. 2-(methylamino)ethanol, etc., is reacted with phosgene to give a 2-oxazolidinone expressed by formula III, e.g. 3-methyl-2-oxazolidinone, etc. In the process, the reaction is carried out in the presence of water, i.e. in an amount of 3-30 times based on the aminoalcohol and a dehydrochlorinating agent, e.g. sodium hydroxide, triethylamine, pyridine, etc., while keeping the pH of the reaction system at preferably 3.0-10.0, particularly 5.0-8.0. USE:An aprotic polar solvent and additive component for various compositions.
