PURPOSE:To obtain through direct polymerization process a transparent polymer outstanding in color tone and lubricity, suitable for electrostatic application casting, by reaction between a dicarboxylic acid, glycol and divalent metal compound and then incorporating the system with a phosphorus compound to make a polycondensation. CONSTITUTION:A slurry prepared by incorporating a mixture of (A) 1mol of a dicarboxylic acid (e.g. terephthalic acid) and (B) 1.05-1.50mol of ethylene glycol with (C) 0.08X10<-3>-2X10<-3>mol, on the metal atom basis, of a divalent metal compound (e.g. zinc acetate) is fed continuously to (D) bis(beta-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (oligomer) to make a reaction. At a point of completion of the esterification, (E) 0.08X10<-3>-2X10<-3>mol, on a phosphorus basis, of a phosphorus compound (e.g. phosphoric acid) is incorporated in the system to perform a polycondensation, thus obtaining the objective polyester with an intrinsic viscosity 0.6-0.7.
