PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical unit which is simpler, more economical and more reliable than these of prior art. SOLUTION: A cigarette rod 3, advancing along a set path P, is introduced into an electro-optical scanning station 4. A cylindrical surface 2 in its entirety includes an illumination means 5 for projecting light in a substantially uniform shape onto a looped area 7 provided on the surface 2, a line scan TV camera 8 positioned to the path P so that an image from a first part 7a of the looped area 7 can be obtained directly, and a reflecting element 9 set at the opposite side to the camera 8 with respect to the path P and directed to reflect and return two images forming the entire looped area 7 in combination with the direct image towards the camera 8. |
