In a process for treating a cylinder block of grey cast iron for reciprocating piston engines, in particular internal combustion engines, wherein at least one cylinder is locally fused in a predetermined track or a grid by means of an energy source and then solidifies by self-quenching, it is proposed, for increasing the wear resistance and corrosion resistance and also for improving the sliding properties, that alloy elements are supplied during the fusion, the alloy elements being formed at least by Mn, P, Cr and Mo and optionally either Cu and/or Sn.
