PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high purity Li2 S without using H2 S for a raw material and under a mild condition by allowing NaSH to react with LiCl and de- hydrogensulfidation after removing the deposited NaCl. SOLUTION: NaSH and LiCl are allowed to react with each other in a non- protonic organic solvent (e.g. N-methyl-2-pyrolidone) preferably at >=0 deg.C, particularly 0-130 deg.C to produce LiSH and NaCl and after the deposited NaCl is removed, de-hydrogensulfidation is performed preferably at 130-200 deg.C, particularly 170-190 deg.C. The resultant Li2 S is allowed to react with a polyhalogenated aromatic compound (e.g. paradichlorobenzene) in the aprotic organic solvent to produce a high molecular weigh polyarylene sulfide.
