PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a β-lactone derivative useful as a polymer raw material, an intermediate in an organic synthetic chemical industry, a raw material for medicines, etc., by reacting a specific aldehyde compound with a ketene in the presence of a transition metal phosphine complex. SOLUTION: An aldehyde compound of the formula RCHO (R is a 1-15C alkyl, a 2-15C alkenyl or the like) is reacted with a ketene of the formula CH2 =C=O in the presence of preferably 0.005-0.1 mol based on the aldehyde compound of a transition metal phosphine complex (preferably palladium- phosphine complex or platinum-phosphine complex) preferably at a temp. of 0 deg.C to room temperature for 0.5-10 hours to give a β lactone derivative. An organic solvetn (e.g. methylene chloride, benzene or the like) is used to obtain the derivative. The amount of the aldehyde compound used based on the organic solvent is preferably 0.2-0.02 mol/L. After the reaction, an acid is added to the reaction mixture, the derivative is extracted with the organic solvent, washed with water and then purified. |
