PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically and selectively obtain a butanediol in an industrially advantageous way by reacting a specific compound with formaldehyde in the presence of a carboxylic acid and a specific amine, followed by hydrogenation. SOLUTION: This 1, 4-butanediol of formula III is obtained by reacting (A) a hydroxytetrahydrofuran of formula I (R is H or methyl) (e.g. 2- hydroxytetrahydrofuran) with (B) 0.5-10 mol(s)/mol of the component A of formaldehyde in the presence of (C) 0.001-20 mol(s)/mol of the component A of a carboxylic acid (e.g. butyric acid) and (D) 0.001-20 mol(s)/mol of the component A of a primary or secondary amine (e.g. dibutylamine) at 30-250 deg.C and at normal pressure-10 atm. to yield a compound of formula II (e.g. 2-formyl-4-hydroxy-1- butene), followed by hydrogenation of the resultant compound, (E), as necessary, in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst (e.g. Raney nickel). |
