The invention relates to a method for producing an inner and outer circular key profile, whereby the marginal area of a shaping tool (1, 101), said marginal area being configured as a cutter and facing the work piece, has an outer or inner contour (6, 106) which corresponds to the circular key profile to be processed. The shaping tool is mounted in a tool holder (17) such that it can rotate around the middle axis (18) of said tool. The tool holder (17) is moved with the shaping tool (1, 101) in an advance direction along the middle axis of the work piece in a manner relative to the same during a simultaneous relative rotation between the work piece (22) and the tool holder (17). In addition, the middle axis of the shaping tool (18) is inclined with respect to the advance direction (19).
