PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the lowering in use efficiency of light and the reduction of contrast by setting the direction of polarization of a polarizing element with a high precision. SOLUTION: A field lens 240, to whose flat face a polarizing plate 250a is stuck, among field lenses provided in a projection display device is provided with a reference shape (reference face RFI) as the reference for sticking of the polarizing plate 250a to its end part. It is sufficient if the reference shape is one or more planes provided in the end part of the field lens 240. It may be a line drawn on the flat face of the field lens 240.
