PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which improves the image quality by setting transfer bias at a proper value. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus of an electrophotographic system possessing a contact transfer member 51, the transfer bias applied to the contact transfer member 51 is set within a range of±10 of a value where "granularity×(-0.16)+MTF(mean transfer function)×0.016" of an output image becomes maximum.
