The invention relates to the use of R-(+)- alpha -lipoic acid, R-(-)-dihydrolipoic acid or the metabolites and the salts, esters, amides thereof for producing pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of type I and type II diabetes mellitus, compensated and decompensated insulin resistance, of the sequelae and late complications of diabetes mellitus such as cataract, polyneuropathy, nephropathy and of the sequelae and late complications of insulin resistance. These pharmaceutical compositions can also be used advantageously in combination with other antidiabetics, especially insulin and/or with additives or stabilisers or ancillary substances such as vitamin E, vitamin C, NADH, NADPH, ubiquinone. The invention furthermore relates to the use of R-(+)- alpha -lipoic acid, R-(-)-dihydrolipoic acid or the metabolites and the salts, esters, amides thereof for producing pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of disorders with impaired function or reduced content of the glucose transporters. |
