A first cermet comprises tungsten carbide particles of size less than 100 nm and a metallic binder, the cermet having a hardness greater than 85 Rockwell A and being used to form a cutting element substrate. A second cermet comprises a first carbide having an average particle size less than about 100 nm, a second carbide having an average particle size of about 3-10 microns and a metallic binder. This cermet may be formed by microwave sintering, plasma assisted sintering, pressure assisted sintering, explosive compaction or rapid omnidirectional compaction. A third cermet comprises first and second regions 34 and 32 containing carbide particles, wherein the average size of the carbide particles of the first region 34 is less than the average size of the carbide particles of the second region 32. Figure 3 shows first regions 34 surrounding second regions 32. This cermet is made by a rapid consolidation process such as microwave sintering. |
