Closure and spout assembly combined with a foil membrane

A closure (2) has an overcap (6) resealably engageable with a spout (4). A foil retainer (40) depends from a top wall (30) of the overcap (6). The foil retainer (40) has an edge (42) which touches and is welded to a foil (20) that is induction heat sealed across an opening (10) within the spout (4). When the overcap (6) is opened, a portion of the foil (20) enclosed by the wall (40) is torn out to open the closure. This eliminates the need for a separate ring pull to open the closure. The closure may be for an open end of a can, having means for engaging over the can end.
