PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a nonwoven fabric for a soft and high grade artificial leather by carrying out a heating and shrinking treatment of a mixed web of propylene terephthalate-based polyester staple fibers and polyester staple fibers having a specific high shrinkability or latent crimpability. SOLUTION: This nonwoven fabric for an artificial leather is produced by carrying out an interlacing treatment of a mixed web of 30-80 wt.% of staple fibers comprising a polyester having propylene terephthalate unit or containing the propylene terephthalate unit as a main recurring unit and having <=3 denier single fiber fineness with highly shrinkable polyester-based staple fibers satisfying the formula 20<=S(%)<=80 [S(%) is the shrinkage percentage when carrying out the dry heat treatment of the staple fibers at 170 deg.C temperature for 15 min] or polyester-based staple fibers having the latent crimpability capable of manifesting >=50 peaks/2.5 cm by free shrinking heat treatment at 170 deg.C according to a needle punching method, or the like, providing a nonwoven fabric and then performing a heating shrinking treatment so as to afford >=30 kg/m<3> density of the nonwoven fabric. |
