A gas cock for controlling the supply of gas to a main and a pilot burner having a thermoelectric ignition safety device, comprises an electromagnet 27 which is fitted within the cock plug 20 and is stationary with respect thereto, an armature plate 29 capable of being pressed against the electromagnet 27 and co-operating with a gas shut-off closure member 14 provided in the path of the gas through the cock 20, the coil of the electromagnet 27 being connectable to the current conductor 31 of the thermoelement by means of a sliding contact 33, 312 which is open only in the zero position of the cock. The contact member 33 is mounted on an insulator 34 fixed to the cock 20 and comprises a U-shaped section element which extends through an angle of 120 degrees. The contact head 312 is mounted in an insulator 35 in the valve casing 10. In operation, for connecting the inlet 11 to the main burner outlet 12, the handle 26 together with spindle 30 is pressed inwardly to move the armature 29 against the electromagnet 28 to open valve member 14 and allow gas to flow to the pilot burner outlet 37. The handle 26 together with the cock 20 is then rotated to bring the contacts 33, 312 into connection. Ignition of the pilot burner developes a current which is fed through the contacts 33, 312 to energize the electromagnet 28 to retain the armature 29 in position, which also holds valve 14 open. The cock 20 is then rotated to align a side wall port 20 (not shown) with the main outlet 12. Further rotation of the cock 20 effects control of the gas amount passing through the outlet 12. If the electromagnet becomes de-energized, the valve 14 is moved to the closed position by a spring 15 and the cock 20 has to be returned to the zero position before ignition can be repeated. The sliding contacts 33, 312 may be reversed.
