Sheet collating apparatus comprises a distributing device aligned in succession with a plurality of receivers to deliver a predetermined number of sheets into each receiver, the number of sheets for each receiver being controlled in response to the sensing of a row of coded perforations in a data card. The card 13, Fig. 3, is introduced into a throat 9 between plates 10, 11 and rests on the nip between normally stationary feed rollers 17, Figs. 2 and 3, and pressure rollers 18 urged against the rollers 17 by springs 25. A button 5 is then pressed. which inserts pins 27 into the card path and withdraws the rollers 18, so that the card falls on to the pins and aligns its lowest row of perforations with electrical sensing contacts 15, the button then being released to restore the rollers 18 and retract the pins, the contacts co-operating electrically with the plate 10, on a conducting plate attached thereto, where perforations are present. In response to the electrical contacts made, the distributing device remains stationary until the required number of sheets has been delivered to the first receiver and is then moved to the next receiver, thereby rotating, through linkage 22, 20, 19 the rollers 17 sufficiently to move the card downwards a corresponding distance and bring the next row of perforations into alignment with the contacts 15. |
