In a double friction clutch for use in forward and reverse transmission paths of industrial motor vehicles and comprising upper and lower spring-applied pressure plates 9, 10 and associated friction discs 6 all in a common housing 12 bolted to a flywheel 14, the clutches being disengaged by two sets of release levers 1, 2 rocked by a common pedal-operated disengagement bearing (not shown), a locking ring 3 which permits selective locking of one or other or both clutches in the disengaged position is supported on rollers 23 on the housing and is provided with cam teeth 13 engaged by a latching lever 8 and by one or more shift levers 4 operated by full depression of a release lever 1 of one of the clutches to rotate the ring and to present castellations 33 thereon under either or both sets of lugs 31 or 32 on levers 1 and 2 respectively, to lock the respective clutch in the disengaged position. The locking ring may be arranged so that both clutches may be locked in the disengaged position (not further described). The lever 1 acts on lever 4 when the levers 1 and 2 are depressed to disengage the clutches, to rotate the locking ring by an amount dependent on the depression of the lever 1, full depression of the lever 1 permitting the latching lever 8 to pass over one tooth 13 and, on releasing levers 1 and 2 maintain the locking ring in its new position so that the previously disengaged clutch is now engaged and vice versa. Partial depression of levers 1 and 2 rotates the ring 3, but on releasing these levers, the latching lever 8 returns the ring to its previous position. |
