A gate valve has a rotary nut 21 held captive in a rotary sleeve 22 by locknut 23. The sleeve has an enlargement 28 located between a washer 31 and a guide sleeve 26, the latter having a surface 30 which co-operates with surface 29 of sleeve 22 to preclude leakage when the valve is closed. The head 19 of stem 18 has a surface 33 which abuts surface 32 of washer 31 when the valve is open. Chamber 36 is evacuated via port 34 to remove leakage fluid. The head 19 is pinned to the holder 10 of valve plates 4, the latter being biased apart by spring 5 acting through centred discs 6. The valve plates are retained by strut 35 and the assembly is prevented from rotating by pins (14) engaging grooves (16) in holder 10. The valve has an indicator 37 which may include contacts for remote warning lamps. A gland may be additionally employed. An adjustable stop 11 causes the reaction on sleeve 22 that brings surfaces 29, 30 together. |
