Petrol of high octane number and lower reactivity and volatility is prepared by a process in which the first stream of exit gases from the cracker (B.Pt. range -10 degrees to +77 degrees C) consisting predominantly of C4-6 tertiary alkenes, is contacted with a lower alcohol e.g. methanol or ethanol, in the presence of an etherifying catalyst e.g. a sulphonated polystyrene resinous material, to convert most of the alkenes to ethers. - The ethers stream is then combined with at least one stream containing hydrocarbons boiling in the range -10 degrees C to + 219 degrees C to give a low volatile petrol. - Octane numbers for the C5 alkene fraction of 97.3 are increased to 100.8 after etherification. |
