A process for the preparation of a glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic resin, which process comprises blending an unreinforced resin with a masterbatch glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic resin, the masterbatch glass fibre reinforced resin containing 0.5-10% by weight of a dispersion aid which is either a high viscosity lubricant defined as having a viscosity in centistokes of 10-120 at 100‹ F. and a boiling point of at least 200‹ F., a low molecular weight resin defined as being a thermoplastic resin having a melt flow of 50-500 gm/min, or a plasticizer. The amount of glass fibres used is suitably in the range 20-90% by weight, whilst the amount of dispersion aid is preferably 2-8% by weight. The thermoplastic resin may be polystyrene, styrene -acrylonitrile copolymers, acrylonitrilebutadiene - styrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyformaldehydes, polysulphones, polyphenylene oxides, polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins and polycarbonates. The high viscosity lubricant may be mineral oil, the low molecular weight may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, styrene - acrylonitrile copolymer or nylon provided it has the characteristics specified above, whilst the plasticizer may be dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate or a mixture of ortho and para-N-ethyl toluene sulphonamides. In one embodiment the masterbatch glass fibre reinforced resin is employed in the form of pellets or granules in which the fibres may be aligned generally in the direction of the long axis of the pellet or granule. The glass fibres preferably have a length of “ to ¢ of an inch and a diameter of 1/16 to # of an inch. The dispersion aid may be added to the masterbatch glass fibre composition in any suitable way. It may be added directly to pellets or granules, which are subsequently tumbled, or as an emulsion, admixed with the resin, in the form of a water solution or emulsion, in a bath through which a glass strand is passed, or admixed with melted thermoplastic resin in a reservoir through which glass fibre strands are passed.</p> |
