The synchronous machine is supplied from an invertor. Nominal current values for a phase current controller are generated in a stator current nominal value generator. Stator flux indicator is oriented along the field by two independently variable components, of which one is always perpendicular, and the other always parallel to the rotating field axis. Two orthogonal field components related to the stator, determining the instantaneous position of the rotating field axis, convert the field oriented nominal value components into two stator related nominal value components which are applied to the stator current value generator. Nominal value component (Iwcurrent component generating the torque, is limited to a value at the most corresponding to the machine instantaneous excitation current value.
