Electroless nickel plating is applied to nonconducting substrates, e.g. glass, ceramics, or plastics, esp. to the signal surfaces of optically readable data carriers with high storage density. The substrates are first sensitized in SnCl2 soln., followed by activation with AgNO3, and PdCl2, then plated in a bath contg. NaH2PO2 as the reducing agent and with the compsn. :- 6.2 g/l NaC2H3O2 + 3H2O; 1.3 g/l H3BO3; 3.3. g/l (NH4)2SO4; 34.2 g/l of NiSO4, 6H2O; 25.0 g/l Na2H2PO2, H2O; and 0.1 g/l NH4F. The bath has pH 5.5-6.0, and is used at 32 degrees C. The plating of a master glass plate for audio cutting foils, or data carriers made of pressed PVC-PVA plastic, where the carrier can be given a reflecting coating in an immersion time of ca 10 mins. The Ni deposit can then be electroplated, e.g. for mfg. dies for pressing gramophone records, or for mfg. video records.
|
