<p>Polymeric compsns. are prepd. by polymerising a mixt. comprising 100 pts. wt. of (a) 25-70 pts. nitrile of formula CH=C(R)CN (where R is H, 1-4C alkyl or halogen), (b) 15-70 pts. styrene, and (c) 5-20 pts. indene, in presence of 1-40, pts. (pref. 1-20) of (d) a rubber-like polymer based on is not 50 wt.% of butadiene or isoprene and is not >50 wt.% of styrene, acrylonitrile or ethyl acrylate. They are useful in the packaging industry, esp. in mfr. of bottles, films, sheets and other receptacles and packages for liqs. and solids. The new compsns. have good shock resistance, low vapour permeability and high softening temp. They are also solvent resistant and are easily worked. Shock resistance increases as proportion of butadiene or isoprene increases, but so also does permeability to gases. Pref. (a) is acrylonitrile, (d) is a butadiene-acrylonitrile or butadiene-styrene copolymer. Esp. pref. is an acrylonitrile-styrene-indene interpolymer in presence of a butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber contg. 50-90% (pref. 60-80%) butadiene.</p> |
