The press tool produces ceramic items such as plates from a powdery mass, having first and second halves each with a cylindrical external wall, and moving in relation to each other along a horizontal path between the filling, pressing and unloading positions. An annular sleeve is adjustable along the same path in relation to both halves and fits round their outer walls. In the filling position this encloses a space between the halves and leaves a filling passage open, while in the pressing position it seals the space off, and in the unloading position is separated from the first half. The outer wall (32) of the first half (24) is of larger diameter than that (78) of the second (50), and the sleeve (80) has two portions of different and corresponding internal diameters, the smaller-diameter one sealing off the space between the halves in the pressing position. An adjusting mechanism (62) acting between the second half and the sleeve causes the larger- diameter portion of the latter to protrude beyond it, thus securing the pressing with reduced force.
