In a direct reduction plant having a shaft furnace for reducing iron ore and having a steam reformer for producing a reducing gas composed of gaseous hydrocarbon compounds and having a device for heating at least some of the reducing gas to be fed to the shaft oven, according to the invention either hydrogen sulphide or a substance producing or liberating hydrogen sulphide in the reducing gas is additionally introduced into a reducing gas system from its exterior, so that the hydrogen sulphide concentration of the reducing gas is in the range 10 - 100 parts per million by volume at the inlet of the shaft furnace.
