The IC engine exhaust gas afterburner is based on known practice with an igniter. There is thermal recycling - primarily by counterflow - between incoming raw gas and outgoing afterburner exhaust, and various possibilities for increasing heat exchange. A catalytic-oxidation stage is introduced at the end of that exhaust line, its life lengthened not only conventionally, e.g. by vibration damping suspension, but also by immediate direct combustion in the afterburner of the large amounts of contaminants associated with cold starts. Once the entire system has reached a predetermined steady state thermally, gas treatment - by afterburning, catalytic oxidation or a harmonised combination of both - is determined by gas quality.
|
