<p>A surgical instrument, such as a surgical electrode (202), and an ultrasound transducer (201) both extend through a single elongated insertion member, typically a catheter (100). The ultrasound transducer (201) extends from the proximal region of the surgical instrument (202) containing the instrument controls toward the distal end of the catheter (100) from which at least the operative tip of the surgical implement (202), and the ultrasound transducer (201) extend. Means are provided for rotation of the ultrasound transducer (201) to enable generation of a circular tissue reflectivity image transverse to the axis of the ultrasound transducer (201). Liquid crystals are further provided to facilitate visual monitoring of the ultrasound, and if present the endoscope (203) outputs in real time. Also an ultrasound medium within the surgical site is provided by fluid inlet, and removal means through the catheter (100).</p> |
