In the winding machine a last winding layer (37) of the winding material (7) is wound from the end of the wound article (2) in a retracted position wherein a known automatic labelling machine (12) at the production end of a known winding machine (1) is associated with same so that using a self-adhesive label (32) it automatically sticks the label each side with the wound winding material (7) before the subsequently free end (22) thereof is cut. The position of the label store (33) is infinitely adjustable by an adjustment device (51) level with and at a small distance (29) from the surface of each wound article (2). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is automatic and the free end of the wound material is the shortest possible to avoid coming loose during subsequent handling.
