Making a garland of radial wood fibres with a composition like textile, natural or artificial hair, uses a round piece of wood about one hundred and thirty millimetres long and a diameter of from ten to twenty five millimetres. The wood should be spruce or similarly long grained which is boiled or steamed and then fixed, in a wet condition, in a lathe with spindle speed of from four thousand to five thousand six hundred revoltuions per minute. Working with a chisel bit to a penetration of about 0.1 to 0.6 millimetres, the fibres are prised away from the core but not cut off, and a ring shaving is formed by a sliding action of the chisel towards the lathe stock. The fibres are teased out radially from the surface of the rod and the garland so formed is then cut off from the rod and dried.
