First and second channel (31,23) of the rotary unit inside the housing (2,3) are arranged axially adjacent and radially within the ring (40) interior (68) and connect to chamber (67) so the rotary unit within the chamber forms a first displacement stage to transfer the fluid along the two channels to the second stage. Both channels are in the housing wall (56) and are linked by a spiral groove in this wall. The two housing walls thus separate the chamber wholly or in part from the outer chamber (66). Cells formed between the adjacent pistons (43) hold the fluid being passed between the channels and when the unit (65) rotates. Both channels lie radially outside the drum (17) as carried within the ring, and a control pin (12) rotatably mounted on the drum has arcuate low-pressure and high-pressure slots (28,33) working with the drum cylinders (41) in alternation. The first channel is in phase with the low-pressure slot as against the channel phased with the high-pressure slot.
