Process which consists in enantioselectively hydrolysing, with immobilized lipases, the racemic mixture ethyl (R,S)- 2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutanoate ((R,S)-HPBE) of formula (I) to obtain ethyl (R)-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutanoate ((R)- HPBE) of formula (II) and (S)-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutanoic acid of formula (III). The compound of formula (II) is an important intermediate in the synthesis of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. The process is performed in aqueous media, under mild pH and temperature conditions and using immobilized-lipase biocatalysts obtained by adsorption of the enzymes, with very low ionic strength, in hydrophilic supports chemically modified with a dense layer of well-defined hydrophobic groups. <IMAGE>
