PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily and efficiently producing a 4-amino-5- cyanoimidazole derivative and the corresponding intermediate. SOLUTION: This method for producing a 4-amino-5-cyanoimidazole derivative of formula (III) and the corresponding intermediate of formula (II) are provided as shown in the reaction formulas [wherein, R1 are R2 are each H, a (substituted) alkyl, (substituted) alkenyl, (substituted) alkynyl, (substituted) aryl, (substituted) aralkyl, (substituted) heterocyclic group, (substituted) heteroalkyl, hydrocarbon group having an alicyclic skeleton, (N-substituted) carbamoyl or alkoxycarbonyl; and a halogenating agent is a compound selected from the group consisting of phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorus oxybromide, diphosphoryl chloride, sulfonyl chloride, sulfuryl chloride, phosgene, diphosgene, triphosgene and chloroformic acid trichloromethyl ester].
