PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method capable of increasing a sheet medium treating speed in an automatic sentence feeder of such a system as reading an image while moving forward and backward medium used mainly in an inexpensive scanner. SOLUTION: A sliding clutch is used in a feed roller 4 mechanism so that the feed roller 4 can be kept stationary even when a drive roller 6 is rotated reversely to prevent a sheet medium 20 from being pushed rearward. Also, a delay mechanism is used in the feed roller 4 mechanism so that the feed roller 4 can be rotated in forward direction after the drive roller 6 is rotated in forward direction for a specified time to keep a specified interval 16 between front and rear sheets.
