PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document separator for obtaining an excellent image by preventing a pickup roller from biting in a carrying document. SOLUTION: This document separator 1 is provided with a separate roller 3 arranged on a rotary shaft 2, an arm 4 vertically turnable to the rotary shaft, the pickup roller 6 arranged in an end part of the arm 4, and a rotation transmitting mechanism 10 arranged on the arm 4, and transmitting rotation of the rotary shaft 2 to the pickup roller 6 via a torque limiter 21. A peripheral speed Vp of the pickup roller 6 is set faster than a peripheral speed Vs of the separate roller 3, idle rotation in the same direction as the rotational direction of the rotary shaft 2 is allowed, the connection of the separate roller 3, the rotation transmitting mechanism 10 and the rotary shaft 2 is intermitted, the arm 4 is energized upward by a tension spring 32, and energizing force is set larger than load torque of the torque limiter 21.
