The apparatus has a saturation calculating unit sequentially calculating saturation values of pixels composing an input image signal. A histogram analysis unit (400) calculates gains that correspond to saturation values accumulated in respective intervals. A total gain calculating unit (402) calculates a total gain from the gains of the respective intervals, such that saturation of the signal is controlled based on the gain.
