PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a display element having good sealing strength and no misalignment of substrates by controlling the time for a sealing material to reach a display material to be uniform within the plane by a simple method without using an expensive device. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a display element filling the inside with a display material having fluidity includes sealing the periphery of a first substrate and a second substrate having electrode patterns formed on opposing faces. The method includes: a disposition step of disposing the display material, in the first substrate having a sealing material and a first control means capable of switching into either a suppression state of suppressing the display material from moving to the sealing material and a promotion state of promoting the display material to move to the sealing material, the display material being disposed inside the first control means while rendering the first control means into the suppression state; and a promotion step of rendering the first control means into the promotion state and promoting the disposed display material to move to the sealing material.
