In an optical scanning apparatus for a character reader comprising a lamp 10, Fig. 1 to illuminate the record 12 and photo-cells 30a-30d responsive to light reflected from the record, a mirror-like reflecting surface 35 is provided behind the record at the scanning position. This mirror serves to reduce the noise signal due to dark specks &c. on the paper. The character image is passed by mirror 25 and lens 28 to a scanning ring having four groups of four holes, light passing through the holes being conveyed by light guides 26a-26d to the photo-cells. The mirror surface 35 may have up to 15% transmission so that an image of the characters may be viewed in the mirror 45. |
