[Also in Division H3] In a magnetic shift register or twisted loop ring counter with shift between stages in either direction, each stage consists of a main core K n-1 to K n+1 , Fig. 1, and an auxiliary core K<SP>1</SP> n-1 to K<SP>1</SP>n+1 switched in turn by two phase pulses I p1 , I P2 applied to respective exciting windings R, the signal induced in an output winding S by a switched core being applied through a diode D 1+ or D 1- to an input winding E on the succeeding or preceding core, depending on the selective closure of a switch S 1+, S 1- , S 2+ , S 2- at the time the associated core was pulsed by Ip 1 or Ip 2 . By alternate closure of switches S 1+, S 2+ in phase with pulses I p1 , I p2, respectively, stored data is transmitted forwardly from stage to stage, while alternate closure of switches S 1- , S 2- transmits data in the backward direction. Information in a stage may be read-out non-destructively by closing a switch S 1+ , S 2- in turn so that data is transferred from a main core to an auxiliary core in a stage and back again, an additional read-out winding U being provided, Fig. 3. This Figure shows the modifications necessary to convert the shift register of Fig. 1 to a twisted loop ring counter, the final auxiliary core K 5 <SP>1</SP> being coupled to the first main core K 1 . Additional two-phase pulses I v1 , I v2 applied to the final auxiliary core and the first main core, respectively are used for inversion of fed-back data; the pulse I v2 resetting the first main core K 1 to state " 1 " in preparation for the transfer of stored data from the final auxiliary core K 6 <SP>1</SP>, which data if a " 1 " switches core K 1 to the " 0 " state. Pulse I v1 is used similarly to rest the final auxiliary core to state " 1 " in preparation for data transfer in the reverse direction.
