An optical gain module (OGM) in the form of an active Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is provided. This amplifier module used in various configurations can increase the saturation power by up to twice as much as conventional amplifiers with up to twice the gain, while rejecting up to half of the noise generated in the two arms of the active MZI, thereby decreasing the amplifier noise figure significantly.
