A portable device for applying a length of adhesive coated tape around an edge of a box. The device includes an L-shaped guide shoe adapted to contact the edge and adjacent surfaces of a box, and a tape applying head. The tape applying head supports an end part of a tape supply and presses it into engagement with one surface of a box as the guide shoe is positioned in contact over the edge of the box. The tape applying head is then driven from one end to the other of the guide shoe and slides along the tape to apply it around the edge of the box. The device then severs the applied length of tape from the tape supply, and the head is returned to its starting position. Retractable spaced brushes with opposed bristles engage the edges of the tape to retain it on the applying head prior to use of the device, and to subsequently hold the newly severed tape end part against the tape head as it returns to its starting position.
