Mixt. of chloroform or methylene chloride and alcoholic cpd. is subjected to extractive distillation to isolate the chlorinated hydrocarbon constituents. Process involves feeding water at the hed of the distillation column so that chlorinated hydrocarbon to water by volume ratio is 0.1:1 to 4:1, and simultaneously extracting water on hydrocarbon vapours.After cooling of the vapours part of the organic phase is recycled and the balance is collected. The aq. phase collected at the bottom of the distillation column contain the alcoholic material and other possible impurities.Process is simple and give pure prods.
