PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high dispersion type steam reforming catalyst which high dispersion-supports ruthenium of an active metal and has practical strength to be kept for a long period and a method for producing hydrogen which uses the catalyst and employs liquid hydrocarbons equivalent to inexpensive high molecular weight naphtha and kerosene as a raw material. SOLUTION: In a high dispersion type steam reforming catalyst containing (a) aluminum oxide, (b) at least one kind of oxide selected from the group consisting of the oxides of group II, group III, and lanthanoid metals in the periodic table, (c) at least one kind of substance selected from clay and a clay mineral, and (d) metallic ruthenium, preferably, initial breaking strength is at least 50 kgf and breaking strength after a steam strength deterioration test and a heat history strength deterioration test is at least 40 kgf. A raw material comprising liquid hydrocarbons 0. 2 ppm or below in sulfur content, 30 vol.% or below in aromatic compound content, at least 1 in carbon number, and 300 deg.C or below in distillation range under ordinary pressure and steam are contacted with the catalyst to produce hydrogen by keeping a steam/ carbon ratio to be 2.8-10, the amount of the raw material to be supplied to be 10 h-1 or below, and a reaction pressure to be at least 2 atm. |
