Prodn. of perfume component hydroxycitronellal comprises isomerising 7-hydroxygeranylamine deriv. (I) or 7-hydroxynerylamine deriv. (II) in the presence of catalyst consisting of bivalent palladium cpd. and phosphine cpd. and hydrolysing thus obtd. 7-hydroxyaldehydeenamine (III). In the formulae, R1 and R2 are each 1-6C alkyl or cycloalkyl or they denote 5 or 6 members ring together with adjacent N atom. Pref. the catalyst is obtd. by reacting 1 mol. of palladium cpd., 1-2 mols of trivalent organophosphorus cpd. and 1-5 mols of alkali metal phenoxide.
